Updated: Oct 30, 2019

When you're switching over to eating plant base foods. You might want to consider some substitutions that might help you make the switch. I know for me the most difficult thing to give up was cheese. For some people, it might be meat. Below, are some plant base options to replace beef, ham, poultry, and seafood.

Replace meats with...

1. Seitan meats

(made with vital wheat gluten)

You can make hamburger patties, sausages, ground meat, steaks, ham, poultry, or even deli meats.

2. Pea protein meats

Add this in your next veggie burger pattie for a more protein and adds more of firmer texture.

3. Mushrooms

Great for veggie burgers, meat loafs, meatballs, etc.

4. Beans

(i.e. black beans, chick peas)

Saute, mash, and season them for making black bean burgers, meatballs,

ground meats, and etc. Also, Chick peas, are great for making tuna fish salads.

5. Textured vegetable protein

(TVP)(also made from soy)

Boil some water and pour it over the TVP meat and let it absorb the "meat". It's ready to be seasoned and cook for making stir fry's, burritos, tacos, and casseroles, etc. Plus, for making chicken strips or chicken nuggets.

6. Tempeh

(dried & fermented soy)

Its a firmer texture than tofu. It's great for making ground meats for tacos, burritos, burgers, and so on.

7. Tofu

(made from soybeans)

Tofu can be marinated, sauteed, air fried, baked for making so different kinds of meat substitutes. Great for adding to seitan recipes, or making burger patties, steaks, chicken nuggets, seafood (like shrimp, cod, etc.) and much more.

8. Lentils

Lentils come in so many different colors. They are great to make meatloaf's, burger patties, meatballs, etc.

9. Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds are great to create textures within your meats. They are great for crushing them and adding them to your burger recipes.

10. Jackfruit

Jackfruit is great, if you want to have shredded beef for burritos, casserole dishes, tacos, pulled pork and much more.

You can be so creative making different meat substitutes. It's all how you marinate or season your "meats". These are some of the top 10 plant base foods that are great alternatives for replacing meat.
